Bathtubs

Clawfoot tubs, cast-iron heritage.

A clawfoot tub is the bathroom decision that commits a room to a period. Crateworks supplies cast-iron clawfoot tubs in roll-top, slipper, and double-ended forms, with heritage or contemporary feet styles, finished or painted as the bathroom calls for.

Roll-top, slipper, double-ended

Roll-top: the classic clawfoot. High rolled rim, single slope, end-drain. Originated 1880s. Slipper: one end raised and sloped (the "slipper") for back-rest. Double-ended: symmetrical, raised at both ends, center-drain, sized for two soakers.

Feet and finish

Feet styles: imperial ball-and-claw (most traditional), lion's paw (heavier, ornamental), modern eagle's-foot, or contemporary plinth (rectangular for transitional projects). Feet sold separately from tub; pair as the bathroom style calls for.

Exterior finish: polished cast iron (raw bare metal), painted (any color, pre-applied or site applied), or porcelain enamel (kiln-fired). Interior is always porcelain enamel.

Common questions

Cast iron is the traditional spec: heavy, holds heat well, lasts indefinitely. Modern reproductions sometimes use lighter acrylic with a cast-iron-look exterior, but the cast-iron real article reads differently in person. Specify cast iron unless budget or structural floor capacity demands acrylic.
Roll-top: most traditional, the original 1880s form, single-slope, end-drain. Slipper: one raised end for a back-rest. Double-ended: symmetrical, center-drain, sized for two. Primary bath statement piece.
Empty: 250-400 lbs depending on size. Full with water and bather: 700-1000 lbs. Confirm with structural; most second-floor bathrooms can handle it but the joist span and load capacity should be verified before install.
Clawfoot tubs traditionally use floor-mount taps that stand alone from the floor next to the tub, the cleanest look. Wall-mount taps are an option when plumbing rough-in runs through the wall. Deck-mount taps do not work on clawfoot: no deck to mount on.
Stock-finish cast-iron clawfoot tubs 8-12 weeks. Painted-finish or specialty patina 12-16 weeks. Heritage hand-finished reproduction tubs depend on foundry queue.
