Chandelier Sizing by Room.

The most common chandelier sizing mistake is buying too small. A chandelier needs to read as the visual anchor of the room, not a small fixture floating in space. Two formulas cover most rooms: room dimensions in feet, added together, equal the chandelier diameter in inches (a 12x16 room takes a 28-inch chandelier). For dining rooms, chandelier diameter equals table width minus 12 inches.

Sizing by room type.

Dining: diameter = table width minus 12 inches. Hang 30 to 34 inches above table top with 8-foot ceilings, 36-40 inches with 10-foot ceilings.

Foyer: diameter in inches = sum of room dimensions in feet. Two-story foyer: chandelier bottom one foot above main floor doorway height.

Bedroom: chandelier diameter one-third of bed width minimum (queen bed = 20+ inch chandelier minimum). Hang 7 feet off the floor minimum for clearance.

Living: room dimension formula applies. Hang 7 feet off the floor minimum, 8 to 9 feet for higher ceilings, with the bottom of the chandelier 30 inches above any seating directly underneath.
